STORIES

Tell me your stories, which part of the chapter did you come from?
As tales are written I read, that we’re just biding time as they’ve been and gone.
And I know you’re just a passing sentence, but I’d sure like to get to know you at least for a while
‘cause I do believe in “meant to be’s” and the reasons show themselves to us in good time

We wait with baited breath
To see what happens to us next
We’d be mistaken to expect

I’ve got a leveller in here, a voice that often talks to me
Who wants me to get a grip of what I’m meant to be
And we’re all just sittin’ pretty, riding on the tidal wave
Though storms roll in and blue skies break, a calm sea home one day

Deliver me the plot line, give me everything you have I’ve got the time
We’re none of us The Author, just verbs becoming patient hearts and open minds
A little understanding, and a good sense of humour will sure get us far
For who knows what tomorrow brings? but at least we have each other on this page of ours

We need all the grace we have
And always ready willing hands
As we get written into the tract

I’ve got a leveller in here, a voice that often talks to me
Who wants me to get a grip of what I’m meant to be
And we’re all just sittin’ pretty, riding on the tidal wave
Though storms roll in and blue skies break, a calm sea home one day

And I wouldn’t have it any other way…

JR Farthing – 2011

The thought of our lives written in an everlasting book, our stories intertwined into destiny’s eternally good read. Be it mere fiction or cosmic fact, it’s the eternal idea that’s forever made new.

TIME TRAVEL

Young man, possibilities
Spring woods, railway bridge
Pen and pad, secret place
Hopes and dreams, and thoughtful days

Ideas, emotions and songs flow as he journeys in light years
Which pass in a moment’s existence, the playfulness of his soul
Answers to questions that he seeks, the eternal within him.
A light that will not be extinguished, the love in which he believes.

This boy won’t fare so well in the real world
Oh but he’s got something it needs.

I want to go there and see him, sit down and talk for a while
I know he’d find it confusing, but I think I could make him smile
Somehow we’d bridge the gap of all the years between us
And I’d tell him to stay.

I want to go there and see him, sit down and talk for a while
I’d probably teach him some new tricks, and give him lots of advice
But most of all, as the sun set on our railway bridge
I’d tell him to stay.

I want to go there and see him, I’ve dreamt of it so many times
Knowing all that I now know, I’d return there to save his life
From the pain and the heartache of his own mistakes
And tell him to stay…
Just the way that he is.

Young man, heart and mind,
to the bridge in June ‘95
Bare foot across the grass,
nothing to lose and no turning back

If only he could be told not to ever let any one
Make him doubt or let him believe that in his way there is any wrong
To always stay true to the man that he can and should become
And stay clear of so many paths which promise all but lead only to lost

They say the brightest flame burns the quickest.
I’d tell him to become a firestorm.

I want to go there and see him, sit down and talk for a while
I know he’d find it confusing, but I think I could make him smile
Somehow we’d bridge the gap of all the years between us
And I’d tell him to stay

I want to go there and see him, sit down and talk for a while
I’d probably teach him some new tricks, and give him lots of advice
But most of all, as the sun set on our railway bridge
I’d tell him to stay

I want to go there and see him, I’ve dreamt of it so many times
Knowing all that I now know, I’d return there to save his life
From the pain and the heartache of his own mistakes
And tell him to stay…
Just the way that he is.

And yes I know, we have to learn, we have to live, we have to grow
Life moves its way, we shape with it, it will work out, we’re on our road

It’s just a fantasy that sometimes I find so irresistible.

I want to go there and see him, and tell him that he’ll be fine
At times the journey is rough, but it will be alright

If he keeps his faith and holds on to his hope and love
If he stays…

Just the way that he is.

JR Farthing – 2011

It’s twofold; imparting the wisdom of experience to a younger self, yet re-discovering all that was so natural then but lost today. If time travel existed, what would you tell yourself and what would you learn?

GOT YOU

Good and bad times will come and go
And the outcome of tomorrow no one knows
It’s just a pocketful of chances that we take
Oh and dare I say it, just an ounce of faith?
I know it feels safer, predictable
And the uncertainty scares us all sometimes
And things haven’t been going so well have they?
Well I’m ready and willing to take some of the strain

Don’t you fear a thing, turn around, I’ve got you
Don’t hold it in, let it out, I’ve got you
Anything you need, any time, I’ve got you
Don’t you know that I won’t leave you behind
I have got you

Well you’re not alone I have been there
When it feels like you just can’t win
It’s waking up wondering what the point is
Of walking out another day in your skin
These times are hard, they try us all
But you’ve had far more than your fair share
You can talk about it any way you like
Between you and I there is no wrong and right

Don’t you fear a thing, turn around, I’ve got you
Don’t hold it in, let it out, I’ve got you
Anything you need, any time, I’ve got you
Don’t you know that I won’t leave you behind
I have got you

Oh come on what are good friends for?
For you right here there’s always an open door
Oh now come on what are good friends for?
For you right here there’s always an open door

Don’t you fear a thing, turn around, I’ve got you
Don’t hold it in, let it out, I’ve got you
Anything you need, any time, I’ve got you
Don’t you know that I won’t leave you behind
I have got you

JR Farthing – 2012

Friendship. Pure and simple.

HOME

There’s a place that I know not too far from here
Where the wind blows through oaks that have seen a thousand years
And rays of light can dance on waters crystal clear
When your head’s humming and your heart is heavy come to here

It’s not hard to find, you just close your eyes
I will be waiting on the other side.

Guess I’m trying to say that you don’t have to be alone
I’ve made a place here for you I am waiting
No matter what the landscape of your heart may be
No matter what your struggles just take rest here
I’m never far from you however distant you become
Always willing able – anticipating
I’ll take the journey with you, we’ll go any time
Come stay with me a while you need not fear

Because everybody needs a place to call their own
Lay down with me I’ll take you home

This world is all so know it all and be grown up
Weight on your shoulders and innocence so far from us
It’s good to set the burden down and to just be
By a river on the grass lie down and know that you are free

The worries and cares can just wait a while
There’s no darkness here only light

Guess I’m trying to say that you don’t have to be alone
I’ve made a place here for you I am waiting.
No matter what the landscape of your heart may be
No matter what your struggles just take rest here
I’m never far from you however distant you become
Always willing, able, anticipating
I’ll take the journey with you, we’ll go any time
Come stay with me a while you need not fear

Because everybody needs a place to call their own
Lay down with me I’ll take you home

I’m waiting, I’m waiting
For you

Everybody needs one, not bricks and mortar, or any worldly place. In the realm of heart, spirit & soul, all seek shelter, safety & peace

A BOY, B GIRL

They both liked the bright lights,
In places of extreme sensory stimulation.
They would both yearn for escape, with reasons
that were different but hearts that were the same.
He didn’t do people so well, she surrounded herself
with them every chance that she could.
He couldn’t understand the impulse – to charge into
her space, she thought it weird, but wasn’t phased.

There is no analysis, no text book answers or statistics.
They carve a world out all their own, and make it work.
No expert or authority, no eminent psychologist could, understand this.
But between them there’s a knowing look – and a smile that says it all…

Autistic boy meets a Bipolar girl. Enough said.

When she’s high she’s like his source of warmth and light
when she’s low the ground collapses with a hurricane close behind.
At his best he’s like her very own weather station, at his worst
he orbits lost moons – stranded satellite.
But he’s studied her so obsessively He’s got algorithms
for every single pattern that she has
And as for the storms she’ll go through, well, they will be his stimulus
the point at which his feet return, back to the ground.

And B girl’s got a hurricane due any moment now.
A Boy’s been out on his nebulous far too long
The chaos that ensues this lyricist can’t write
But through it all somehow this equation survives

There is no analysis, no text book answers or statistics.
They carve a world out all their own, and make it work.
No expert or authority, no eminent psychologist could, understand this.
But between them there’s a knowing look – and a smile that says it all…

Autistic boy meets a Bipolar girl. Enough said.

JR Farthing – 2011

It shouldn’t work but it does. I think we all have A Boy & B Girl’s traits to varying degrees, so it’s a love story with a twist, and a challenge on perceptions too. Either way, love beats the odds.

BRODY

This town isn’t what it used to be, we told him it was dangerous
We saw it coming and we turned, but Brody never lost his nerve
So the reservoir got hit by a bomber charging true in the dead of night.

Never took the steady road, he left here as soon as he could
Because he likes the highs and lows, believes we’re born to ebb and flow
We still remember him running drenched across the moor with a guard dog on his heels.

Just a backpack and guitar, and the little that he’s saved,
Gets a ride to anywhere, because he can sing in any place.

Brody takes the jump and doesn’t worry if he falls
As he’s hurling through the air no fear and no regrets at all
He says that you get bruised and scarred as you earn your wings and stars
And you wear them all as proof of having lived right from your heart
Sure you’ll misjudge the distance; you’ll get the maths wrong sometimes
But don’t you know that even eagles have to swoop and dive

He thinks we’re here to learn and when we’re not we’re wasting time.

His ideas scared us some; it’s not what we were taught at school
Besides, we felt safer on the ground; he liked it closer to the clouds
So he took his rooftops while we sat on the fence
We sure did like him though.

Now he’s been almost everywhere, and never took the driving seat
Got faith within and that’s enough, takes as it comes because he trusts
There’s a force that breaths through every single on earth
And it’s got his back.

The one that got away, eyes ablaze with all he’s seen
A one in a million that we knew, who lives what we can only dream

Brody takes the jump and doesn’t worry if he falls
As he’s hurling through the air no fear and no regrets at all
He says that you get bruised and scarred as you earn your wings and stars
And you wear them all as proof of having lived right from your heart
Sure you’ll misjudge the distance; you’ll get the maths wrong sometimes
But don’t you know that even eagles have to swoop and dive

He thinks we’re here to learn and when we’re not we’re wasting time.

JR Farthing – 2011

There’s one in all of us, as his friends have discovered!

MAGPIES

I ain’t gotta do nothing but live and die.
It’s the love you have in your heart, the truth you keep alive.
It’s the memories you make, the compassion that you show.
It’s the soul you put into the world, how far can you go?

The truth is simply that the world is bigger than me.
What is this sojourn in the face of eternity?

There’s so much to distract us, it’s a story that’s beaten and old.
Of how we laid our conscience to sleep a long time ago.
So c’mon and take all you can, let it rust and tarnish your soul.
Shiny things for magpies, religion of silver and gold.

Oh someone please, won’t you tear that temple down.

A boy carries three times his weight in water
So unclean it’ll give him cholera.
In a part of the world where people pay the price
For the shiny things in the lives of us magpies.

We build a store house here, stack it as high as we can.
So the things today we lust, tomorrow will be ground into dust.

There’s so much to distract us, it’s a story that’s beaten and old.
Of how we laid our conscience to sleep a long time ago.
So c’mon and take all you can to dust and ashes it goes.
Shiny things for magpies, religion of silver and gold.

Oh someone please, won’t you tear that temple down.

So as you exit this life I pray you leave as dove and not magpie.

JR Farthing – 2011

It’s an old protest, been around in songs for decades, that there’s no excuse for the kind of poverty and suffering so many face in the world. Cut to the root of it and what have you got? – Greed.

THREE THINGS

Well I’ve seen my fair share of changes
Life re-arranges in the blink of an eye.
Once I thought I could control it
I’ve been taught well in the stark reality.

The dawn of a new time is here
So here are three things I have learnt this year;

That what you have today is not a guarantee you’ll know it tomorrow
With every door that closes a new one’s opened after the sorrow
And I’d stake my life on those two but most of all remember this:

Keep on smiling.
You’ve got to keep on smiling.
You just keep on smiling
It’ll make sense to you in the end.

You told me by Facebook IM, that it didn’t really feel like you could win here, no
But my friend no one really loses, and you’re so beautiful, I’m not letting you quit.

The dawn of a new time is here
So here are three things I have learnt this year

That what you have today is not a guarantee you’ll know it tomorrow
With every door that closes a new one’s opened after the sorrow
And I’d stake my life on those two but most of all remember this:

Keep on smiling.
You’ve got to keep on smiling.
You just keep on smiling
And while you learn it, I’ll always be there.

JR Farthing – 2012

Simple reflections from a New Year’s Eve.

THE AWAKENING

Nothing but a map, through the chaos-order times, And a searchlight, shining in the dark
No arms but the word and voice I share with you the truths within you secretly know
We trip, we fall, stumble and try, but alone all we do goes by the by

And this will surely be the awakening, the 99% will speak
This will surely be the awakening, no longer can the masses sleep
This will surely be the awakening, where the corner stone and frustum meet.

Go on and look at me how I know you want to like I’m a few bids short of a full nest
But don’t you know it’s gonna be the crazy ones who’ll speak out and get the good work done
And if you’ve ever suspected all’s not as it seems
then deep down friend, you’re as insane as me

And this will surely be the awakening, the 99% will speak
This will surely be the awakening, no longer can the masses sleep
This will surely be the awakening, where the corner stone and frustum meet.

There is so much at work out there, you’ve got to be careful what you trust
So many ushering in an answer behind a motive of power lust
Hard times are surely coming my friend, just remember to always look up
They underestimate the true life and they underestimate us.

And this will surely be the awakening, the 99% will speak
This will surely be the awakening, no longer can the masses sleep
This will surely be the awakening, where the corner stone and frustum meet.

JR Farthing – 2012

Who leaves this world better than they find it? I think it’s those who contradict the norm and make their stand.

WITH A ROSE

The black and white pictures she kept, not a detail she would ever forget
The pendant that she never took off given to her by her gentleman friend

Pin striped and hat in hand, a single rose for you my love
“Oh Rita, how lovely you are, well I’m thanking all of my lucky stars.”

The big band at the Saturday dance,
Strolls on the peer by the moon linking hands
A parting kiss on the porch and a longing glance
“Well that’s just how we did romance” you would say.

And you both knew it from the time that you met
The way you do when you encounter what’s meant
I asked you the secret to it lasting for all those years
You smiled and answered that it’s just give and take

I can still remember it well, the day that Rita went on ahead
You were brave like she told you had to be, and it took every inch of your strength

From then on you weren’t really here, just awaiting for your guide to come along
They said they heard you calling her name, and smiling in your sleep as you talked about…

The big band at the Saturday dance
strolls on the peer by the moon linking hands
A parting kiss on the porch and a longing glance
“Well that’s just how we did romance” you would say.

And you both knew it from the time that you met
the way you do when you encounter what’s meant
I asked you the secret to it lasting for all those years
You smiled and answered that it’s just give and take

The Stetson and the suite that you wore for her
the brogues that you polished for hours
You insisted that you had to be buried in
and no one really understood.

But somewhere in pools of white Rita’s waiting by the porch-way light
With a rose I know you’re going to her, and she’ll say
“Come on Honey, let’s go dancing tonight”

JR Farthing – 2011

I never knew Rita and Seth in real life, only in my imagination which they took over and wouldn’t give back until their story was told.

THE ISLAND

It took so long to find the words, I know you think that it’s easy
They’re written here but still I’ll say, they don’t come near to what I see
As being close to adequate, They’re spoken in truth to you at least

I’ll start with I was lost so long, but somehow you managed to find me
And that surely you’ve become my passion my pain so completely
Beyond all of the infatuations of our youth
Love knows of summers’ heady heights but come the winters I am…
Rooted with you

You and I on Lakeland water that keeps an island for us
Take friends, mead and ribbon bind, let love declare two hearts unite
So often I’m taken been back there with Shelly’s words in mountain mists
And I’m reminded that you are my complete and the song…
Within.

The promises that true love keeps aren’t always the ones young lovers say
In the star-dazed headiness of youth we just don’t know the right ones to make
But what is certain through it all is that what is meant finds its own way

You are flight control when my head is at home in the sky again
Yet my rocket fire launch when earth pulls me down into dark depths
You are the beauty I behold within life’s shades of grey
With arms of safety and with hands to keep you I will chase…
The fears away

You and I on Lakeland water that keeps an island for us
Take friends, mead and ribbon bind, let love declare two souls unite
So often I’m taken been back there with Shelly’s words in mountain mists
And I’m reminded that you are my complete and the song…
Within

I guess it is the way that you can still stir every part of me
I guess it is your head on my chest in the first lit urban morning’s breeze
I could give a million reasons my love and they’d all be true
I think the one that counts the most is there’s no place I’d rather be…
Than entwined with you

JR Farthing – 2011

This was a long time in the writing. I wanted it to be very real, to capture love in its complexity and depth, because that, to me, is its beauty. It’s not a prime time radio love song, just an honest one.

LEGACY

A single drop fell on to the apple that glistened in the sun
And like anything of beauty, man would claim it as his own
Suspended in the heavens there it orbits with the stars
This perfect living sphere that we foolishly call ours
Carved out of glory, in a universe aligned
Declaring with all eloquence peace, harmony and life
By hands of grace we had it handed down to us
By greed and in our ignorance we betray eternal trust

It doesn’t matter what your belief
When we enter into this life we are given eyes to see
We’ve got to take the veil off, we’re still Adam and we’re Eve
Never can we seem to learn to stop taking from that tree

The revolutions of this planet around the sun
Can’t be stopped to halt the future we’re creating
So what will be our legacy?

The tears are showing and the changes have begun
Isn’t it time we asked what we will leave our children?
What will be our legacy?

For our commodities will not mean a single thing
And you can’t compensate with money for the ruin
That could be our legacy.

If there was ever a reason to re-think what we call need
It’s written everywhere we are, it breathes, it lives and speaks
Of wisdom so much higher than human kind can know
Yet by and through its actions, a purpose clearly shown
By the way that all things in its nature coexist
By the union of its elements and the joy that it beholds
How can we who see this, and receive it all our lives
Live out our days in darkness, to the truth of it be blind?

We are made stewards of the greatest work of art
Millennia in the making our survival at its heart
We’ve got to learn the lessons, we’re still Adam and we’re Eve
Gone wild in Eden’s garden with our senses taken leave

The revolutions of this planet around the sun
Can’t be stopped to halt the future we’re creating
So what will be our legacy?

The tears are showing and the changes have begun
Isn’t it time we asked what we will leave our children?
What will be our legacy?

For our commodities will not mean a single thing
And you can’t compensate with money for the ruin
That could be our legacy.

So what will be our legacy?

JR Farthing – 2011

This wonderful earth in its splendour and glory, speaks of all that’s beautiful, good and true. Let’s keep it that way. How we live today is the world we leave behind.

DWELLING

Rings around you is where I dwell and bands of silver I could sell
Empty words are all very well, I want to know if you can tell
The wall around me still is tough and it will break when you care enough
But I don’t want to make you feel that I would ask of you too much

When the night-time’s shining through and this bed still feels of you
We stand on solid ground in sharing something strange but true
I didn’t mean to say those things, I say things I don’t mean when I’m scared
When you lay down next to me, I need to know you want to be there

And I will try to make you feel, I want for you to know it’s real
How much more of me can I give, how much more of this just to live
People always speak of love, I wonder if they know what they’re speaking of
Because empty words are all very well I want to know if you can tell

When the night time’s shining through and this bed still feels of you
We stand on common ground in sharing something strange but true
I didn’t mean to say those things, I say things I don’t mean when I’m scared
When you lay down next to me, I need to know you want to be there

JR Farthing – 1996

I wrote this song over 20 years ago, G and I released it on the very first EP. It’s really the song that began the road to Theory Of Form. Resurrected, dusted off and given a new lease of life. Our little trip down memory lane.
